The sunroom (sunporch, solarium, conservatory) has as many functional purposes as it does names. But whether they’re used as reading nooks, gathering spaces or just places for daydreaming, sunrooms gleam with light and functionality.
To me, the biggest draw of the sunroom is the sheer amount of natural light that these spaces let in. And now that we’re finally coming out of our winter weather slump, it’s the perfect time of year to sit relax and soak in the sun. Besides, I think we can all use a little more vitamin D.
So let’s take a look at a few cheery sunrooms and the elements that make them so great — it might just be the thing to put us all in a sunnier mood.
Comfortable seating. The ultimate sunroom acts as a second living room. Fill your sunroom with upholstered seating, plush pillows and throws, indoor-outdoor rugs and tables that you might think belong inside. They’re perfect out here too.
Multiple purposes. Ideally a sunroom can accommodate both a seating arrangement and a dining table, so it can be utilized as frequently as possible.
Privacy shades. Sunrooms get sunny, of course. And the light and beautiful windows are why we love sun rooms. Even so, the space may still get overheated, and if you have nearby neighbors, very public. Curtains or shades are must-haves to make sure that you don’t overheat (and no one sees you overheat) as you browse this blog on a lazy afternoon.
Create a sunny office. Turn your sunroom into an inspiring workspace. Being able to get a dose of the outdoors while having a Wi-Fi- connection is how everybody wants to work, right?
Make the most of limited space. If you don’t have room for a full-size sunroom, create a cute faux version in front of a large window with a simple and comfortable seating area where you can sit back, unwind and indulge in the view.
Create Whimsy. You can use this room as an opportunity to have fun with thrifted finds, salvaged pieces or tchotcke’s that don’t quite fit into your formal spaces and other home decor. Find new uses for an antique sewing table or fruit crates, for instance.
Think earthy materials. Be one with nature in a sunroom composed from natural elements. Pick out a variety of wood planks, bricks and stones of your choice from your local hardware store to adorn your room. Doesn’t this sunroom truly look like an oasis?
Simplicity. A pretty and clean scheme is all that is needed, like in this patterned, but simple sunroom.
