Today’s photo of the day is all about Chicago’s Congress Plaza Hotel! Originally constructed in 1893, the Congress Plaza Hotel featured cobbled streets, gaslights, and horse drawn carriages. The hotel was originally called the Auditorium Annex when it opened to house the throngs of visitors to the 1894 World’s Fair in Chicago. The hotel has also established itself as a unique destination with a touch of glamour appealing to stars of the political world, stage and screen. Many famous people have stayed at the hotel, including several U.S. Presidents. In fact, the Congress Plaza Hotel was once known as the “Home of Presidents” among Chicago hotels. Over the years, various owners have updated the hotel in continuous efforts to keep pace with the conveniences offered by modern accommodations properties.
Fun Fact: Following the outbreak of World War II, the Government purchased the Congress Hotel and used it as a headquarters for U.S. Army officers.
