Remember this Call to the Wild? A property photographed by VHT photographer, Gene Schnar, was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal as the House of the Day.
The owner, Joyce Marcus, 65, says she purchased this roughly 2-acre property in the village of Riverwoods in northeastern Illinois in 1978. She said she purchased the land for $80,000 and spent about $400,000 on constructing this pagoda-inspired contemporary home, which was completed in 1981
Ms. Marcus, who works in the marketing and creative design industries, was inspired to build this home after seeing the work of architect Arthur Dennis Stevens. Mr. Stevens had designed a commercial building she worked in during the ’70s, she said.
Mr. Stevens, who studied with architect Frank Lloyd Wright, said he developed his unconventional designs while under his tutelage. As with several Wright homes, the design is predicated on inviting the outside in. The stone walkway, pictured here, leads up to the second-story entrance to the home. Outside of a few metal beams, he said most of the home is constructed with cedar and glass. ‘It’s built in the woods, so we capitalized on that,’ he said.
The home was listed in June 2011 for $2.67 million, according to the listing agent. The price was reduced to just under $2 million in April and was relisted in September at the same price. Furnishings are negotiable but not included in the list price. Tracy Wurster of Prudential Rubloff Properties has the listing.
